Typical Road Timings for the National 3 Peaks
It’s just as important to keep an eye on the traffic and timings on the road sections as it is on the mountain, so it’s essential to have an intelligent driver who can take all this into account. The typical timings for the road sections between the summits as well as the post codes for sat nav is given below (as per Google Maps). Clearly any timings will depend on a number of factors – and while you could allow 10 hours for the driving on a good day you’ll need a driver who’ll drive these sections virtually non-stop barring essential toilet stops. That allows 14 hours for the walking! That allows soemthing like 5hours for Ben Nevis and say no more than 4 for Scafell Pike and the same for Snowdon – and you’ve got around an hour to spare! Strong walkers could potentially shave an hour off each of the mountain timings.
Fort William to Wasdale Head – Pen y Pass
This is the most popular route for the National 3 Peaks challenge with a suggested 10 hour driving time.
The Post Codes you’ll need for sat nav are:
Glen Nevis Visitor Centre: PH33 6ST
Wasdale Head: CA20 1EX
Pen-y-Pass: LL55 4NY
Fort William to Seathwaite – Pen y Pass
An alternative version that saves around an hour on the road, but the route up Scafell Pike from Seathwaite is longer and you’ll probably lose any time advantage.
The Post Codes you’ll need for sat nav are:
Glen Nevis Visitor Centre: PH33 6ST
Seathwaite: CA12 5XJ
Pen-y-Pass: LL55 4NY
